Scripture in Stone

Scripture in Stone

One of the most incredible relics of the Angkor temples to see are the carvings on the wall. Angkor Wat is certainly no exception with Apsara, Cambodian war stories, and scripture engraved into the walls and stone pillars throughout the temples. Today’s image is certainly no exception. All the way up this giant pillar were...

Look Where You Aren’t

Sometimes when you’re presented with a fantastically beautiful scene like I was fortunate enough to have been on Wednesday night, we tend to ignore what else is around us. It’s natural to do, but you can also potentially miss other as-beautiful (if not more so) scenes. One thing I actively try to do when I’m...

The Way Forward

Mt. Rainier

A friend and fellow photographer today asked me what I thought about the idea that given the availability and affordability of high quality digital cameras today, that photographers would be out of business one day. People wouldn’t buy images anymore because they could so easily take the same image on their own.

Are the images that people can take on their own and upload to Facebook or tweet about simply enough?

Proving (or disproving) A Point

About 4 months ago, I booked a flight to San Francisco and accommodation for 4 nights spanning last weekend. While I’ve always wanted to go to and visit this iconic city in America, I’ve seen so many images of the city and its landmarks that I got really excited about photographing it. The more and more I read about photography and dream about what camera I may purchase next, or what lens to upgrade to, the more I feel like it’s all a bunch of marketing ploys to get consumers to spend money. Yes, these companies are in the business for a reason like any other company out there and let’s be honest, they’re doing very well. Something just seems fishy to me about it all though.

Just how much of the work that goes into a photograph is the camera? As a photographer, I like to think that I can remove one camera from my camera bag, and drop in another and capture the same image to convey the message within the image. It dawned on me that the only way for me to prove the point of “The camera is irrelevant – People take good photographs, not cameras” that we all hear so often was to actually try it for myself.

Why HDR?

Today a mate of mine gave me some really nice feedback on the image you see above of Bimbo’s Cantina on Capitol Hill in Seattle. We had a bit of a chat about the place (it’s a crazy, fun pub come Mexican joint in a local, hip neighbourhood of Seattle) which was lots of fun....

You Don’t Need A Big, Fancy Camera

I was thumbing through some old images this morning and came across the particular image above. It was taken with my trusty point & shoot camera about 3 years ago, a Canon (gasp!) SD750 that’s about ohhh, 5 years old now. It’s a 6 megapixel camera, and shot this image (according to EXIF data on...
